perhaps the most comforting words ever written.

the magic hour

You do not have to be good.
You do not have to walk on your knees for a hundred miles through the desert, repenting.
You only have to let the soft animal of your body love what it loves.

  1. I love this quote. I need a reminder sometimes to not be so hard on myself.

Also, beautiful photograph! The sunbeams are so dreamy.

  3. Hi Ruth, I'm Ruth, too! I encountered your site as I began researching a blog-revamp for myself. I'm so happy to come across your work here. Thank you! This is one of my favorite poems. For years, the lines you've excerpted resonated for me. And lately, as I've begun photographing gutters (don't ask!) it's this part that speaks to me: "Whoever you are, no matter how lonely, the world offers itself to your imagination, calls to you like the wild geese, harsh and exciting — over and over announcing your place in the family of things."
