finding space

the pond in februarymy spot by the pond

My favorite spot--by the pond. It's a quick fifteen minute walk through the woods.

I sat here for almost an hour with a runny nose and freezing fingers and an increasingly wet bottom, but I didn't mind.

Coming here is like finding tiny crumbs of soul food, taking them in slowly and deliberately so as to fortify my soul. Slowly, but surely. Crumbs are something.

From my journal that day:

Someday I'd like to live in a fabulous location. Someplace that evokes magic and peacefulness.

(As I wrote that, two wild ducks came swooping up from beyond the pond and flew right over my head, squawking away, then flew off out of sight as quickly as they'd come. As if to tell me, "Hold on, Ruth. Those dreams aren't far off." And perhaps they were also saying, "Look where you are now, Ruth, with us. You're already finding magic and peace right where you are.")

My hope is that creating physical spaces of joy will create internal spaces of joy. Do you have a space like this, literal or figurative?

  1. I love this. Beautiful photos and beautiful realization you had (with the help of the ducks). Lovely blog - so glad I found it.
